Je suis fous, je suis sot, je suis méchant. Autoportrait de James Ensor

Luc de Heusch, B 1990, 52’, E (without subtitles)

A fictional self-portrait in which a narrator recounts the story of Ensor’s life based on his writings, the film ties into the tradition of Belgian art documentation in its combination of newly staged and partly re-enacted scenes with sequences from older film portraits: such as from Idylle à la plage (1931) by Henri Storck and Masques et visages de James Ensor (1948) by Paul Haesaerts, who are regarded as the founders of the Belgian documentary genre.
