(interview and sequences) from Art City: A Ruling Passion
Chris Maybach, USA, 2002, 11’, E (without subtitles)
To this day, the artist (born in 1965 in Connecticut) continues to almost exclusively paint her trademark small-format portraits for which no one sits as a live model. Instead Elizabeth Peyton uses snapshots of friends, pictures from celebrity gossip magazines and stills from music videos as her source material. Her painting of the young Leonardo DiCaprio with a swan in the exhibition FUTURE PRESENT has already gained cult status. Recorded in her small New York studio, Peyton talks with her own dry humour about the working methods and intentions of her art – which, appealing and agreeable at first glance, seeks to unmask the traditional image patterns of our digital society.
