Jef Cornelis, Belgium, 1968, 54’, E/F/G/NL (with E subtitles)
Held in Kassel in 1968, Documenta 4 was marked by controversy and debate over the roles of European and American art as well as generational conflicts over the aesthetics and politics of art. The young Jef Cornelis (*1941), who had only been working for Belgium television since 1964, gives all parties – artists and art critics alike – a chance to speak in this film. He sketches a fascinating portrait of the times with some protagonists revelling in triumph and others having to fight for their aesthetic survival.
